Chapter 11

With the storm cleared, Brynn anticipates discovery of Acker’s empty cell and heads to the mess hall to maintain appearances and get food for the weakened prisoner. On the stairs, Grenadine hints she knows Brynn prefers solitude with her pet, unsettling Brynn further. Soon, marching guards begin systematic shiel inspections.

Brynn rushes home, where Acker momentarily threatens her before recognizing the food and climbing out to hide on the roof. He pointedly returns her blade and warns her to scream if needed. Brynn stages a just-showered look moments before Kai arrives with two guards to search her small room.

The guards examine the wet drain, bed, and window; Acker’s bloodstained shirt lies near the sink, a near-fatal oversight. They miss it, depart, and Kai quietly reveals the prisoner escaped with inside help. Overwhelmed, Brynn draws Kai close; he kisses her and admits he loves her, a first for Brynn that stirs powerful feelings, though duty pulls Kai away.

After he leaves, Acker reenters through the window, angry at the risk. Brynn throws his incriminating shirt at him, accusing him of endangering them both. Acker starts to respond, then uses Brynn’s true name, noting Kai “overdid it,” before Brynn’s exhaustion overtakes her and she falls instantly asleep.
