Chapter 3
Overview
Aboard the ship home, Brynn becomes the scapegoat for the Market disaster and endures harassment, while Kai reaffirms his loyalty. Messer retaliates against Paul and is caught with Masie, risking harsher discipline. Messer and Aurora reveal opposing stances on confronting Kenta, and the trainees brace for Captain Wren’s judgment.
Summary
Brynn returns to the ship amid hostile whispers, shouldering blame for the Market debacle. After a planted rat prank, she retreats to her hammock beside Messer and Kai, reflecting on Gramble’s accusations and secretly examining the dagger taken from the Kenta soldier. Kai arrives, presses her to report harassment, and they argue about the futility of confronting Paul under Gramble’s bias.
They cautiously discuss culpability for the Market chaos. Brynn assures Kai she didn’t steal, and Kai promises protection; they fall asleep holding hands, uneasy but reconciled.
In the night, Paul awakens screaming as cockroaches swarm him. When suspicion lands on Brynn and Kai, they wordlessly conclude Messer is responsible. The hull quiets, and Brynn goes topside.
On deck, Aurora’s gesture sends Brynn to the bow, where she finds Messer with Masie, Gramble’s daughter. After Masie flees, Brynn and Messer talk: he hints Aurora wants to challenge Kenta, while he fears she has already forced their path by blowing the Market. Both anticipate uncertain punishment from Captain Wren, possibly exile.
They briefly share comfort before Brynn warns Messer not to provoke Paul again. The ship presses on toward Alaha as loyalties harden, risks escalate, and judgment looms.
