Overview
Adrift under brutal heat, Acker scrapes the hull while hiding pain from his infected wound. Blue refuses fish, then kills and swallows a seagull, signaling nearby land. Summary
On a sweltering day at sea, Brynn and Acker manage their dwindling resources. Acker, still concealing pain from his infected side, insists on diving to scrape barnacles from the hull. Blue refuses more fish, and Brynn’s nausea grows as they ration water under the punishing sun.
While Acker works in the water, Blue pointedly rejects the barnacles and then ambushes a passing seagull, swallowing it whole. Acker takes the kill as a hopeful sign that land is near, since birds cluster around islands and coasts between Alaha and Kenta.
The renewed hope keeps them focused and quiet as they continue chores, unwilling to jinx their luck. Acker’s repeated dips help cool his fever, but Brynn suffers waves of dizziness and nausea, forcing her to pause work and fight the urge to vomit.
Near dusk, Brynn spots a dark smudge stretching on the horizon that could be more than an island. She alerts Acker, confirming their likely approach to land, then immediately vomits over the side.
