Chapter Fifty-Seven: Amari
Overview
At the festival, Amari and Tzain reconnect through teasing and bold dancing, turning tension into open affection. Zélie briefly finds joy, while Inan’s intent gaze reveals his growing feelings for her. The chapter deepens romantic ties and offers respite before the quest resumes.
Summary
Amari narrates the late-night festival as music, dancing, and food fill the camp. Tzain finds her among the revelers, teasing her about being hard to find and calling her the prettiest girl present. Their banter turns playful as they jokingly reference the night they were locked in a tent, easing recent tensions.
They notice Zélie happily dancing and drinking palm wine, spinning a divîner child, which lightens the mood. Tzain’s earlier sadness resurfaces at the sight, but fades when he spots Inan staring at Zélie with unmistakable longing, signaling their mutual attraction.
Drawn by a cheering circle, Tzain jumps in to dance, deliberately ridiculous and exuberant, winning the crowd and making Amari laugh uncontrollably. A seductive dancer joins him, briefly stirring Amari’s insecurity, but Tzain pulls Amari into the ring.
Amari resists, then gives in as Tzain spins her. Fear dissolves into laughter and shared rhythm. In the center of the circle, Amari focuses solely on Tzain’s smile and warmth, feeling safe and elated, and realizing the depth of her feelings as they dance together.
