Chapter Eighty-Three: Amari

Overview

Amari confronts King Saran and chooses to end his reign herself. After hesitating to avoid becoming like him, she is wounded, then commits and fatally strikes Saran. Roën’s crew holds back guards while Tzain rushes to help. Amari claims her resolve to be a better queen, shifting Orïsha’s power.

Summary

Amari recalls a childhood of brutal training under King Saran, recognizing how he forged her and Inan into weapons. Facing him now, she channels memories of those he harmed—her mother, Binta, and others—and declares that the true monster is Saran.

Amari strikes first, surprising Saran and wounding his thigh, asserting her identity as princess, queen, and the Lionaire. Around them, Roën’s men battle incoming guards while Tzain rushes toward Amari, but she orders him away to face Saran alone.

When Saran stumbles, Amari hesitates at the killing blow, refusing to replicate his ruthlessness. Saran capitalizes, slashing her back and driving her into a pillar, then advances to finish her without remorse.

Amari pivots aside as Saran’s sword bites stone. Seizing the opening, she drives her blade into his heart. As blood spills and Saran gasps his last, Amari steadies her hand and pushes the blade deeper, promising to be a far better queen.
