Chapter Fifty-Three: Zélie

Overview

Zélie tours the jubilant divîner camp with Zu, while tension lingers with Tzain. A foreigner, Roën, briefly steals Zélie’s staff before Inan intervenes. Inan’s uncontrolled magic forces Zélie to coach him by the river, invoking Orí to focus his powers. Their training culminates in reentering the dreamscape, deepening their bond and setting stakes for the coming ceremony.

Summary

Morning in the divîner camp, Zu rouses Zélie, while Tzain remains distant and warns Zélie not to be alone with Inan. Outside, Zélie is swept into the vibrant preparations for the evening’s ceremony, meeting divîners of many clans and witnessing Zu’s enthusiastic plans for stories, blessings, and clan baajis.

Passing Inan and Amari, Zélie is dazzled by the camp’s joy. Zu pushes for Zélie to join the opening procession as a Reaper figure, teasing a moment of awkward warmth between Zélie and Inan. Zélie notices Folake painting clan symbols and the festival’s growing scale.

A foreign trader, Roën, bumps Zélie and secretly lifts her compact staff. Inan confronts him, forcing the return of Zélie’s last keepsake from Ilorin. Roën departs to meet Kwame, hinting at connections beyond the camp. The incident unsettles Zélie but also shows Inan’s vigilance.

Inan winces from suppressing his magic among the crowd, admitting he fears losing control. Zélie offers to help and leads him to the Gombe River. There, she steadies him with a bronze coin and draws out how his Connector power feels, learning that intense thoughts overwhelm him—especially hers.

Zélie guides Inan to call on Orí, teaching the simple plea, “Orí, bá mi s0r0.” As he focuses, heat and a blue glow rise; the world tilts, and together they slip into his dreamscape again. The success proves Inan can channel his power with intention, strengthening their fragile trust ahead of the night’s rites.
