Chapter Fifty-One: Zélie

Overview

Zélie, Inan, Amari, and Tzain reach a hidden divîner camp led by Zulaikha, who heals Zélie and returns the scroll. Alliances form with Zu, Kwame, and Folake, and they plan an Àjọyọ to restore powers before sailing to Zaria.

Zélie reveals Inan is a maji, deepening a rift with Tzain and testing the fragile new coalition.

Summary

Inan rescues Zélie from the Burner, returns the sunstone, and carries her into a hidden divîner settlement led by a white-haired girl named Zulaikha (Zu). The camp teems with divîners. Zu heals Zélie with Healer magic, revealing the community’s growth after Warri and their fear-driven capture of Amari and Tzain.

Amari arrives with an injured Tzain. Zu apologizes for the camp’s actions, and Kwame admits he acted to protect their people. Zélie forgives them, and Zu returns the scroll, pledging the camp’s support. Folake offers trusted traders in Zaria; Zu and Kwame volunteer to join the quest.

Zu proposes holding an Àjọyọ to let divîners touch the scroll and restore their powers. Despite hesitations about unleashing more magic, Zélie agrees, planning to depart for Zaria immediately after to meet the solstice deadline.

Privately, tensions flare: Zélie tells Tzain that Inan is a maji. Tzain confronts Inan over past violence—Lekan’s death, attacks on their village, and Zélie herself. Inan says he wants a better Orïsha and to fix it with Zélie, but Tzain rejects him and storms out.
