Chapter Eighty-Four: Zélie

Overview

With the sacred scroll destroyed, Zélie seizes the solstice’s power and turns to bloodline and ancestry to reach Sky Mother. She sacrifices her blood on the sunstone, channeling generations’ spirits to complete a new incantation. The sunstone shatters, magic floods every being, and Zélie collapses after a profound revelation of unity.

Summary

Reeling after destroying the parchment, Zélie panics as the solstice ignites the temple’s godly statues. With the army pressing in and allies fighting to hold the floor, she searches for the incantation but realizes she felt only Baba’s energy—her bloodline—rather than the deaths around her.

Recognizing a different path to Sky Mother, Zélie decides to use ancestral connection instead of the lost scroll. As more statues illuminate, she seizes the fallen sunstone, envisions Mama, and cuts her palms with the true bone dagger, pressing her blood to the stone to bind her lineage.

Calling on ancestors—maji and kosidán alike—Zélie draws a torrent of spirits through their shared blood. An unfamiliar chant surges into her mind, and she gives voice to it as the solstice light climbs Sky Mother’s form. The power tears at her body, but she demands more, reaching back to the first recipients of Sky Mother’s gifts.

As the final words leave Zélie’s mouth, the sunstone shatters and radiant magic floods the dome. Creation’s origins blaze before her; waves of colored power thread through every heart and soul, binding all people as children of blood and bone—capable of vengeance and virtue alike.

Held by this truth, Zélie experiences both ecstasy and agony as the magic sears her. With allies still fighting and the ritual complete, she is embraced by the revelation of unity and then succumbs, collapsing as darkness overtakes her.
