Chapter Forty-Five: Inan
Overview
Through his psychic bond, Inan is flooded by Zélie’s terror and grief, recognizing her fear as constant under royal oppression. Zélie rejects his innocence, denounces the guards, and vows to hold the king accountable before walking away. Inan realizes how wrong he’s been and that he cannot truly grasp her pain.
Summary
Inan experiences Zélie’s agony through their bond, her pain descending on him like rain and crushing his will. As he reels, he recognizes the terror isn’t momentary but a constant presence in Zélie’s life under the rule he serves.
Zélie’s voice hardens as she names power as her people’s only salvation. She condemns the royal guards as killers shielded by uniforms and refuses to absolve Inan or the king. Wiping away tears, she vows not to let the monarch escape justice and refuses to let Inan’s ignorance erase her suffering.
Zélie leaves, her footsteps fading, severing the fragile moment between them. Left alone with her lingering anguish, Inan understands how profoundly wrong he has been; even inside her mind, he cannot truly comprehend the full weight of her pain.
