Chapter Seventy-Six: Amari
Overview
On the eve of the assault, Amari braids Zélie’s hair and coaxes her to confront the trauma of Saran’s torture. Zélie confesses her magic is gone and even the sunstone feels inert. Amari counters despair with faith, naming Zélie a warrior and insisting they must still attempt the ritual.
Summary
Amari tends to Zélie by braiding her hair aboard the ship, their teasing giving way to vulnerability. Zélie admits she once saw Amari as weak because of Amari’s fear of Saran, prompting Amari to recall facing her father with a blade and embracing her own strength.
The conversation opens Zélie’s grief over Saran’s torture; she breaks down, haunted by memories of chains. Amari apologizes for her family’s harm and anchors Zélie with empathy, invoking memories of Binta and how Zélie once pushed Amari to be brave.
When Amari urges Zélie to speak her truth, Zélie reveals a devastating change: she can no longer feel her magic. She believes the torture severed her connection, and even the sunstone provides no warmth or spark. Unlike the temporary block after Ibeji, this feels like total loss.
The revelation threatens their mission, as only a sêntaro can perform the awakening ritual. Amari wrestles with fear but refuses to surrender. She insists the gods chose Zélie for a reason and reaffirms Zélie’s worth, showing her braided hair as a symbol of strength.
Buoyed by Amari’s conviction, Zélie accepts comfort, and Amari promises to stay with her through the night. Despite the uncertainty, they agree that they must try the ritual, choosing resolve over despair on the brink of the coming battle.
