Chapter Nineteen: Inan
Overview
Inan scales Chândomblé while battling intrusive magic that reveals others’ thoughts. A flashback to King Saran’s brutal training clarifies Inan’s guilt and resolve regarding Amari. Finding Zélie’s tracks, Inan commits to stopping her and destroying magic, escalating the imminent confrontation at Chândomblé.
Summary
Prince Inan climbs toward Chândomblé with Kaea and soldiers below, struggling to control a newfound, intrusive magic that floods his mind with others’ thoughts. He keeps the power active to avoid weakening himself and falling, even as it feels venomous and corrupting.
As Inan nearly slips, he saves Amari’s headdress, triggering a memory of King Saran forcing Inan and Amari to duel in the palace cellar. Amari refused, and Inan, coerced by “duty before self,” struck, creating a lasting rift and guilt he still carries.
Steeling himself, Inan resolves not to fail Amari again. On the ledge, he finds flattened plants and senses Zélie’s “sea-salt” soul, confirming she is close. The discovery intensifies his mission: capture Zélie, end magic, and secure Orïsha.
By the chapter’s end, Inan pushes upward, determined to reach Chândomblé. He frames killing the maji girl and magic itself as the price to save his sister and reclaim the kingdom.
