Chapter Seventy: Zélie

Nailah carries the fugitives into the night as Zélie drifts in and out of consciousness, her back torn open by Saran’s torture and convinced her magic is gone. Tzain lifts her down at a safe encampment, panicked at her condition. Amid gasps, Khani, a novice Healer, hesitates until Amari offers the sunstone, enabling Khani’s warmth to knit Zélie’s wounds and pull her toward sleep.

In their reed-lined dreamscape, Zélie awakens to Inan’s worried approach. Humiliated by pity and desperate to deny Saran’s damage, she hides her brokenness and reaches for the closeness they once shared. Inan apologizes and asks after a Healer; Zélie wrestles with the loss she feels, unable to sense her magic.

When Inan’s pity resurfaces, Zélie counters with a kiss, trying to reclaim the girl she was before the torture. Memories of Saran’s violence intrude, but she presses on, seeking solace in Inan’s arms as he struggles between tenderness and restraint. They move quickly, fearing the dream will end and reality’s pain will return.

Breathless and clinging to each other, Zélie asks him to continue, admitting she needs this to quiet the hurt. Inan’s love and hesitation mingle, suggesting a looming goodbye and his unresolved conflict about magic, while Zélie finds brief refuge from trauma in their intimate bond.
