Chapter Forty-Nine: Amari
Overview
Amari endures Kwame’s brutal interrogation as he stabs Tzain, convinced they serve the palace. When the camp comes under attack by a maji, Folake rushes in and chaos erupts. Amari breaks free, subdues Folake without killing her, stabilizes Tzain, and chooses compassion over her father’s violence while leading their escape.
Summary
Kwame interrogates Amari and Tzain, accusing them of leading palace guards to the camp. He beats Tzain and, driven by grief from Warri, stabs Tzain’s leg and thigh while demanding the truth. Amari pleads that they are not the enemy, invoking shared losses, but Kwame refuses to believe her.
Folake bursts in, announcing that the camp is under attack, possibly by a maji. Kwame hands Folake his bone dagger and runs out, leaving Amari and Tzain bound and bleeding. Folake, shaken by the scene, momentarily flees, giving Amari time to strain against her ropes until they begin to fray.
As the fighting nears, Amari breaks free. When Folake returns to secure them, Amari tackles her. Gripped by memories of her father’s ruthless teachings and Binta’s sacrifice, Amari rejects killing, drops the dagger, and knocks Folake unconscious with her fists instead.
Amari cuts Tzain’s bonds and uses the rope as a tourniquet to slow his bleeding, then crafts a makeshift cane and shoulders his weight. Despite Tzain urging her to leave him, Amari refuses. Using the confusion outside for cover, she commits to saving him and rejects becoming like her father as they move to escape.
