Chapter Eighty-Five: Zélie

Adrift in warmth and darkness, Zélie believes she has died and welcomes the peace as voices of praise surround her. A growing light coalesces into a regal, goddess-like figure reminiscent of Oya. When the figure lifts her headdress, Zélie recognizes her mother, alive in spirit and radiant with love.

Zélie collapses into Mama’s embrace, overwhelmed by the comfort she has longed for since childhood. Mama reassures Zélie that spirits never die and that she has always remained beside her. When Zélie asks about Baba, Mama confirms he is present and at peace, easing Zélie’s grief.

They speak of the temple ritual, which Mama calls unprecedented among the spirits. Zélie admits she did not recognize the incantation, and Mama promises she will learn in time, affirming pride in Zélie’s strength.

As the chorus swells, Zélie tries to bring Tzain to this realm, but Mama warns that neither Tzain nor Zélie belongs there. Desperate to remain, Zélie clings to Mama, choosing the solace of family over returning to pain.

With the light intensifying, Mama insists Orïsha still needs Zélie. As the vision fades, Mama’s tears fall and she urges Zélie to go back, promising it is not over—it has only just begun.
