Chapter Thirty-Two: Amari
Overview
As Zélie collapses after saving the ship, Tzain dives in and hauls her back while the final rival crew boards. Paralyzed by fear, Amari rallies when the enemy captain targets Zélie and fatally strikes him. Their crew secures the deck, and the announcer declares them winners, cementing Amari’s turning point.
Summary
The chapter opens with the ship’s sinking slowed by Zélie’s magic, but Zélie doesn’t surface. Tzain dives overboard to find her as the final enemy ship closes in. Amari and the crew ready weapons, desperate for Zélie to awaken and command the animations again.
Tzain resurfaces with an unconscious, fever-hot Zélie. Amari and laborers haul Zélie aboard, but before they can free her from the rope, the enemy rams their ship and boards. The crews clash violently; Amari freezes, reliving her father’s brutal training and Inan’s blade, pleading just to survive.
Amid the chaos, the enemy captain breaks through, his sword aimed at the defenseless Zélie. The imminent threat snaps Amari into action. She strikes, running her blade through the captain’s gut, stopping him inches from Zélie.
As the smoke clears and the attackers are subdued, silence falls over the arena. The announcer proclaims their victory. Amari’s decisive kill both saves Zélie and marks a pivotal step in Amari’s transformation from fearful princess to active protector.
