Chapter Eleven
Overview
On Demonreach’s roof, Bear trains Harry’s fighters while Michael counsels Harry through raw grief. Michael urges family connection and faith, pressing Harry to attend Sunday dinner with Maggie. A refugee father’s thanks steadies Harry, and he decisively moves on the ghoul crisis by ordering contact with Carter LaChaise.
Summary
As smoky September skies hang over a wounded Chicago, Bear runs brutal pankration drills for the Knights of the Bean, with Will and Fitz among the trainees. Harry grills food alongside Michael Carpenter, nursing bruises from his own lessons and trying to function amid mounting crises.
Michael gently challenges Harry’s claim of “moving on,” pressing for what is actually wrong. Harry finally names his symptoms—insomnia, numbness, intrusive Winter impulses, nightmares, persistent pain—and admits he misses the woman he lost. Michael offers faith and concrete grounding, insisting Harry attend Sunday dinner with Maggie to reconnect with purpose.
During the team meal, camaraderie momentarily cuts through Harry’s greyness. Matias Jiminez, a refugee father, thanks Harry for aiding his sick daughter and pledges support, which loosens Harry’s knot of tension. Harry allows himself to enjoy simple food and fellowship, a small but meaningful step toward stability.
Refocused, Harry resumes leadership. He tells Will to contact Carter LaChaise, effectively escalating the response to the nightly ghoul abductions by demanding a direct conversation with the ghoul king.
