Chapter Forty-Six

Harry brings reusable components for a greater circle to Demonreach, with Lara assisting. On the way down, Harry draws a hard line: Lara and her Court are never to involve his daughter, or he will destroy them. Lara accepts the warning, and both refocus on the task and what is at stake for Thomas.

In a crystal hemispheric chamber Alfred prepared, Harry and Lara spend hours measuring, painting paired circles, sigils, and an infinity symbol, placing anchors and candles. The meticulous work leaves Harry exhausted and nauseated, while Lara remains composed and precise.

During a break, Harry admits fear of failing Thomas after recent losses, and Lara, newly at peace with her Hunger, cautions him not to show such vulnerability alone with her. They share brief levity about Lara’s battle kick that dislodged the Eye of Balor.

Mab arrives without warning, acknowledges Lara’s role in the Titan fight, and discusses Lara’s new status as Winter’s vassal. Mab notes Harry’s troublesome chivalry yet allows the possibility he could free Lara, claiming she plays fairly and rarely loses. Lara gauges Mab’s words carefully, and Harry reminds her that Mab cannot lie, though she can deceive.

After reviewing Harry’s notes and the chamber, Mab judges the circle “adequate” and agrees to begin the major working, setting the stage for the dangerous attempt to save Thomas.
