Chapter Forty-Three

In the castle’s basement range, Harry startles Fitz with gunfire to simulate real combat, forcing Fitz to react instantly. Fitz unleashes focused fire projectiles, igniting the target and revealing significant progress under pressure. Harry praises Fitz’s rapid development but immediately pivots to the ethics of power, warning against preemptive killing and emphasizing that violence breeds enemies and stains the soul.

Harry clarifies that lethal force is for preserving life, not winning points, and stresses learning to recognize when danger is imminent. Acknowledging his own hazardous life, Harry gives Fitz a contingency: contact Carlos Ramirez, a trustworthy Warden, if Harry dies, to secure training and protection from the White Council’s judgment.

Later, Michael leads Harry and Will through newly renovated upper floors. They detail blown insulation, baseboard heating, simplified electrics and lighting, reliable plumbing, and an old-school boiler. Bob has approved the drilling with limits. Michael reveals a comfortable suite with a gas fireplace, built-in shelves, and a hot shower, far removed from Harry’s spartan basement.

Harry resists the change, but Michael suggests the space suits the man Harry is becoming. Mister pads in, claims the warm spot by the fire, and purrs—tipping the decision. With maintenance schedules set and friends’ help acknowledged, Harry is gently moved toward making the suite his new home.
