Chapter Four

Three days after the last events, Harry finishes a workout and meets with refugee parents at his castle. Several children are ill, including a diabetic child, increasing anxiety. When pounding sounds at eight o’clock, Will transforms into a wolf and the Knights of the Bean arm up as families retreat to gather their kids. Harry prepares his staff and demands a password.

Instead of a response, a vellum envelope is slid under the door. The note, from Lara, promises what Harry asked for and more. Opening the door reveals Bear, a towering, cheerful Valkyrie claiming assignment to protect Harry, with trailers of beds, supplies, rifles, and a physician arriving under Riley’s supervision.

Suspicious, Harry demands proof. Bear offers references, including Freydis and a Monoc contract. Harry retreats to his lab and asks Bob to connect him to Vadderung’s office. Vadderung confirms Bear’s identity, states he negotiated the contract himself, calls Bear his best, and advises Harry to keep her well fed.

Reassured, Harry invites Bear in. She asserts she will take the room next to Harry and coordinates unloading with Riley. Bear praises the castle’s magical defenses. She introduces Doctor Lacalle, who immediately focuses on the ill children, and Harry agrees to let her begin care.

Bear establishes her role as Harry’s dedicated protector for years to come, while Doctor Lacalle’s arrival addresses the refugees’ medical crisis, bringing order and support to the embattled household.
