Overview
Mab moves to kill Justine to force Thomas’s choice, prompting Lara’s failed intervention and Demonreach’s stand. Mother Winter arrives, escalating the threat. Harry halts the moment by engaging Thomas’s Hunger, bargaining for sustainability, then shatters the circle to reunite Hunger and host. With Lara’s CPR and Harry’s mind-bridge, Thomas chooses life and revives, leaving Harry to face the Winter Queens.
Summary
The ritual destabilizes when Mab, claiming to grant Harry’s wish to defy doomed choices, advances on ice-bound, pregnant Justine with Medea’s bodkin. Lara rushes Mab but is overpowered and hurled aside. At Harry’s call, Demonreach manifests and roots Mab, only for Mother Winter to tear open the chamber and command the spirit to stand down, freezing the room and freeing Mab to continue.
As Thomas lies dying, Harry recognizes despair in Thomas’s eyes. He locks eyes with Thomas’s unleashed Hunger, freezing the scene, and argues that unchecked devouring ends linear time and thus future feeding. Harry bridges minds with Thomas in a dark inner space, sharing memories of brotherhood, love, and Thomas’s courage to reignite his will to live. Urged to rise, Thomas convulses back in the chamber, gasping as the Hunger rapidly restores his body from starvation-thin to functional.
Lara, tearful and relieved, embraces Thomas as he recognizes both her and Harry. Buoyed by their success and recovering strength, Harry stands and turns to confront Mab and Mother Winter, the conflict with the Winter Queens unresolved.
