Chapter Thirty-Six

Harry spends a mild evening on the castle roof with Maggie bicycling and Bonea chattering trivia, while Toot-Toot stands guard. Maggie asks about combat training, prompting Harry’s protective fears and a practical resolve to teach her safety. Left alone, Harry reflects on selling the castle, the illusion of safety, and his obligations.

He consciously addresses his grief for Murphy, admitting loss and choosing to live. A warm, unifying calm settles in, signaling the start of real healing and renewed purpose.

A subtle supernatural tremor interrupts. Harry challenges the unseen presence, inadvertently inviting it through the threshold. Wardlights flare as a winged, stone-skinned being lands: Basil, a gargoyle. Bob recognizes him as one of Etienne the Enchanter’s earth spirits and spars verbally; Basil deems Bob a failed experiment.

Basil explains he and his kind guard castles for good-hearted wizards and have watched Harry’s kindness under pain. He senses benevolence in Harry and in Maggie’s bicycle. Bear arrives armed, verifies Basil is an original guardian and that even Odin once failed to recruit them.

At Harry’s leave, Basil summons his cohort—Bay, Thyme, Cardamom, Sage, Parsley, and Cinnamon—who require a daily story to stay centered. Despite Bob’s complaints, Bear endorses their utility. Trusting his rekindled inner steadiness, Harry accepts the gargoyles as guests and potential defenders, signaling a step toward rebuilding home and strength.
