Overview
Harry formally introduces Basil’s gargoyles to the castle’s residents, winning the children’s trust and easing fears. Matias affirms faith in Harry’s restrained strength. Harry then summons Murphy’s shade one last time to say goodbye, choosing to let go. Mort arrives, admitting he knew and subtly helped Harry reach closure.
Summary
Harry gathers the castle’s residents to introduce the gargoyles as protectors, setting expectations for when they will appear and how to respond in emergencies. The children, led by Jorge and Maggie, pepper Harry and the gargoyles with questions. The gargoyles present their personalities and roles, and Jorge captivates them by retelling Star Wars, turning apprehension into curiosity and warmth.
Matias approaches Harry privately, contrasting the city’s recent horrors with the presence of good forces he has witnessed around Harry. He defines gentleness as power under control and credits Harry with that quality, encouraging Harry’s healing after loss. Harry absorbs the affirmation, visibly moved.
That night, Harry places Murphy’s pistol on the shrine and summons her shade. Acknowledging his grief, he tells Karrin goodbye and vows not to call her again. Murphy’s shade reassures him that he will be okay and that healing takes time, and Harry accepts that it is time to let go.
The next day, Mort Lindquist visits with beers and admits he knew Harry had been summoning Murphy’s shade. Mort explains he brought Fitz partly to ensure things stayed healthy, turning two problems into a solution. Harry recognizes Mort’s growth, they share a quiet understanding, and toast to how far they have both come.
