Chapter Forty-Eight

Harry’s spirit is pulled into the greater circle with Thomas’s unbound Hunger, turning the containment into a spiritual cage match. As his body sags into Lara’s arms, Mab coolly explains that Dresden separated the demon from Thomas’s body, that it seeks to devour Harry, and that Thomas’s heart is failing.

Assaulted by the suffocating cold of Empty Night, Harry momentarily considers surrendering to oblivion but rejects it, invoking his promises. Realizing the Hunger uses cold against the Winter Knight, he unleashes the mantle. He reframes Winter not as void, but as the will to resist it, slamming his staff to draw warmth and life from Demonreach until sunlight floods the chamber and the demon recoils.

Harry drives the Hunger into the opposite loop of the infinity sigil and calls down lightning through Merlin’s wards, channeling living energy that could have incinerated his body but empowers his spirit. He could annihilate the Outsider, but he sees its vital bond to Thomas and recognizes it has also preserved his brother. Refusing to destroy it, he instead feeds the demon life-energy to stabilize it.

With Thomas’s breaths failing, Harry diverts a fraction of power to strike Thomas with a precise lightning jolt, trying to restart his heart. As the chamber rings with thunder and the Hunger convulses in tandem, Harry orders Thomas to wake.

Mab then raises the stakes: at her call, Demonreach produces a block of true Winter ice containing a shackled, visibly pregnant Justine, emaciated and suffering. Brandishing Medea’s bodkin, Mab proclaims she holds Thomas’s haunted love and unborn son, and vows to slay them both unless Thomas rises, forcing a brutal choice to bring him back.
