Chapter Twenty-One

Harry arrives at the Carpenter home for Thanksgiving and is joyfully tackled by Maggie and Mouse on the front lawn. The moment of playful warmth and family connection gives Harry a rare sense of peace, which he consciously savors before they head inside to celebrate.

After Charity’s feast and football, Harry and Michael sit on the porch with coffee. Michael asks about the Winter mantle, and Harry admits he manages it with discipline. Conversation turns to Harry’s tangled obligations: Mab’s demand that he settle things with King Etri, Lara and Justine’s situations, and Thomas’s peril.

Michael suggests possibilities—weregild or a mediator—offering his own standing with the svartalves to open dialogue. Harry explains Thomas’s Hunger is starving after his near-fatal beating; reviving Thomas risks an uncontrollable kill that might still fail to save him. Michael counters that even slim miracles are real and urges gathering more information on the White Court, their Hungers, and Etri.

Harry admits deep grief and self-recrimination, linking his recent magical failure under pressure to a possible death wish. Michael challenges Harry’s perfectionism, reminding him that failure can happen even with right choices and swears, as a friend, that Harry deserves compassion. The oath’s weight reaches Harry, and he agrees to try, though he doesn’t know how.

As they sit in silence, Daniel rushes out with news: Father Forthill has called with a problem and is asking for Harry, pulling Harry from reflection toward a new, urgent task.
