Chapter Nine

In Demonreach’s castle hall, Harry supervises kids playing basketball with Fitz refereeing. Bear, the Valkyrie, chats with Harry, revealing immense age and witnessing the Crucifixion. She frames Chicago’s recent devastation against harsher histories, provoking Harry’s anger and then acknowledging his personal losses. Bear notes Harry’s poor sleep and overheard self-talk, gently pressing about the woman he’s mourning; Harry pointedly ends the conversation.

Harry meets King Etri at McAnally’s, where Mac clears the room and serves his best brew. Etri, in human guise and accompanied by a tense, nonhuman bodyguard, opens with formal courtesy. He states Thomas Raith violated sacred guest-right by attacking in svartalf halls, killing a trusted subordinate, and attempting regicide; therefore, “a life for a life.”

Harry argues mitigating circumstances: an unnamed possessing entity coerced Thomas by taking Justine and their unborn child. Etri rejects the idea that such a spirit breached his wards, but allows that proof could redirect blame—though consequences for Thomas must still occur to avoid perceived weakness.

Pressed on outcomes, Etri declares that without proof, Thomas must be tortured and executed. With proof, Etri might alter the form of reprisal. He reveals he knows Harry engineered Thomas’s removal and warns that Harry’s conduct will define him as friend or enemy. He grants Harry one year from the abduction to deliver proof or surrender Thomas; otherwise, Etri will pursue Harry personally.

After Etri departs, Mac silently approves Harry’s composure. Bear cautions that even Asgard respected the svartalves’ ferocity, craft, and persistence in war. Harry recognizes Mab would let him face such a conflict alone, internalizing the ultimatum: achieve the near-impossible within a year or face catastrophic consequences.
