Chapter Nineteen

Harry and Fitz finish a demanding leg workout, discussing why consistent, smaller sessions build strength and control. Fitz confesses he tried and failed to use magic during the ghoul attack, and Harry explains how reflexive skill under pressure takes time, emphasizing discipline and focusing Fitz’s practice on evocation fundamentals.

Bear interrupts with news of trouble. Downstairs, a small delegation led by Artemis Bock arrives with two battered Kin, Roger and Bess, who were robbed and beaten by human bullies near Mac’s after dark. With police overloaded and tensions rising in post-disaster Chicago, Harry recognizes growing tribal fear directed at the supernatural community.

Bock announces plans for nonlethal magical reprisals and pointedly threatens to expose Fitz to the Wardens if Harry interferes. Harry, concerned about circles of minor practitioners spiraling into curses and backlash, warns of escalation, unintended consequences, and the moral slide toward black magic born of fear and vengeance.

Seeking a safer alternative, Harry proposes nightly Knights of the Bean patrols to deter street gangs. Bock worries visible muscle could escalate weapons on the other side. Harry insists on unity and measured action, promising to take further steps together if needed.

After conferring with his group and the injured couple, Bock reluctantly agrees to try Harry’s approach for now. Harry orders Fitz to arrange the Knights’ roster to start patrols that evening.
