Chapter Twenty-Three

During the first brutal November storm, Mab arrives at the castle. Will clears the hall of Bean Knights, and Harry brings Fitz to meet her under strict Fae etiquette. Mab appears in regal winter finery, unnerving Fitz. She probes Fitz’s potential, offers Winter instruction and aegis against the White Council, and notes Harry’s past imprudence. Harry resists her poaching of his apprentice, and Mab requests a private audience.

In the library, Mab revels in the storm and pointedly reminds Harry of her leverage. She commands him to conclude the political alliance with Lara by acting as her proxy—sex as the closing mechanism—threatening her bower if he refuses. She insists time is short, values Lara’s mortal influence, and cannot perform the act herself. Mab also expects Harry to resolve Etri’s vengeance by spring.

On power balances, Mab reveals she will not fight Drakul—Winter has no power over him and immortal politics counsel patience over millennia. She warns Harry he is not ready to confront Drakul, though personal battles are part of the Knight’s nature.

When Mab claims Harry’s life has improved under her liegecraft—security, autonomy from the Council, improved health, Molly’s ascension, and Lara’s engagement—Harry’s grief for Murphy resurfaces. He accuses Mab of enabling Murphy’s final fight by raising the banner of will that night. Pressed with her true name, Mab’s fury ices the room as she counters that many died by choice in a necessary war, and that both Murphy’s and Harry’s lives were expendable to stop Ethniu’s greater catastrophe.

Mab then admits she felt Murphy’s fear and unspoken love through the banner, but dismisses Harry’s outburst as mourning and private-council license, warning that a repeat will bring unimaginable suffering. A gale blasts open a window; Mab departs into the snow. Harry, shaking, cools his anger and calls for cleanup of the frost-coated library.
