Chapter Fifty-One

Overview

Two weeks after the rescue, Thomas confronts Harry over Mab’s control of Lara and Justine’s uncertain fate, then asks for distance. Harry consoles Maggie and steadies the household.

A black card from Drakul warns of imminent danger. Harry locks down the castle, summons allies, and readies every defense for a coming assault.

Summary

At sunrise on the castle roof, Harry finishes meditating with Fitz nearby and Bear on guard when Thomas arrives, physically restored but emotionally hollow. They discuss Justine’s captivity under Mab’s purge of Nemesis and Lara’s role managing Thomas’s Hunger. Harry explains Mab’s methods and the price paid—Winter’s leverage over Lara.

Thomas, reeling from lost time, altered urges, and fear for Justine and his son, rejects Harry’s sympathy. Learning Winter now influences Lara, he warns that the White Court would destroy her if they knew. Thomas tells Harry they should not speak for a while, leaving Harry hurt but accepting that Thomas needs time.

Later in the gym, Harry supports Maggie as she processes Thomas’s brusque visit and coaches her on Bonea’s limits despite vast knowledge. Their quiet family moment is interrupted when Bear receives a black envelope. Inside, a stark message reads: “It is my sincere hope that you enjoy your evening. —Drakul.” Sundown is less than half an hour away.

Harry orders Maggie and Mouse to the lowest level, Bear to secure civilians and arm up, and sends Major General Toot-Toot to summon allies by sundown. He tasks Basil and the gargoyles to lock down the gates and guard the stairwell while evacuating residents.

As voices rise and Mouse’s temple-barks resonate through the threshold, Harry instructs Bob to activate the castle’s systems—“all of them.” The Winter mantle floods him as he braces to defend his home and family from Drakul’s impending strike.
