Chapter 4
Overview
Chang explains her PI firm’s work and that she was sent to back up colleague Paul Keever, who called from Mother’s Rest but is now missing and off the grid. Suspecting a small off-book case that grew, she gives it 24 hours. Reacher plans to leave but canvasses town for the origin of its name, finding no memorial or museum—only an agricultural hub and wary locals.
Summary
Over coffee, Michelle Chang outlines her firm’s services and says she was sent as backup to a colleague working “in the area.” She arrived from Seattle to find him gone. The colleague, Paul Keever from Oklahoma City, had called from Mother’s Rest with routine-sounding protocols but left no case on his computer.
Chang infers Keever took on a private, off-book favor that grew into something bigger, warranting her support. His phones are unanswered or out of range. Chang notes an uneasy tone about the town; Reacher adds he disliked the rubber-apron store and that a shy, possibly slow local boy had tailed him earlier.
They conclude the missing briefing forces them to wait for the twice-daily trains. Chang commits to a 24-hour window; Reacher says he’ll likely take the evening train.
Reacher then resumes his solo survey of Mother’s Rest, methodically searching for a memorial stone or museum that could explain the town’s name. He checks beyond the current main street, through side streets and fields where an old marker might sit, but finds no path, stone, fence, or official signage.
Continuing block by block, Reacher reads the town as a practical agricultural trading post—veterinary supplies, equipment, repair shops—prosperity mixed with patchwork maintenance. He sees no memorial and no sign of the weird kid, but notices an unfamiliar man eyeing him oddly, reinforcing the town’s wary atmosphere.
