Overview

At dawn Reacher wakes the woman for the morning train, then canvasses town for a museum or monument but finds none. The clerk’s grandson tails Reacher and reports his systematic search, deepening the sense of a guarded secret in Mother’s Rest.
Summary
Reacher arrives at a larger-than-expected motel, negotiates the nightly rate down to twenty-five dollars, and takes room 106. An old, one-eyed clerk gives a nearby upstairs room (214) to the Asian woman and, after Reacher leaves, calls unknown contacts to report Reacher’s arrival and room assignment. Ordered to watch, the clerk relocates a lawn chair to observe through the night.
Unaware of the surveillance, Reacher settles in, showers, and sleeps. At dawn he rises, quietly knocks on room 214 to serve as a de facto wake-up before the morning train, and then heads out to explore the town’s broad plaza, grain operations, and main street.
Reacher searches for any museum or monument that might explain the name Mother’s Rest, walking the east–west road he takes to be an old wagon trail and quartering multiple blocks. He finds businesses, residences, and services, but no commemorative site. Meanwhile, the clerk phones his contacts again to note the woman’s return to meet the morning train.
As Reacher continues his methodical sweep, the motel keeper’s twelve-year-old grandson tails him and reports by pay phone that Reacher is searching block by block. The morning train pulls in, unseen through the infrastructure, and Reacher, hungry and without answers, heads to the diner as the town’s quiet surveillance tightens around him.
