Chapter 18
Overview
Reacher and Chang decide to continue working together and drive back to Mother’s Rest at night. The motel clerk reverses course, returning access to Room 215, signaling a tactical pause. They note Room 203 is newly occupied and anticipate trouble tomorrow, while the clerk is ordered to watch but not escalate.
Summary
On the road, Reacher and Chang eat at a rest stop and discuss whether to formalize their partnership. Chang worries the police would treat Keever as a routine missing adult and do nothing. After probing Reacher’s motives, she offers him a last chance to leave; he chooses to continue with her.
They drive back through the dark prairie and return to Mother’s Rest. The town is quiet, with no sign of the Moynahans or any posse. At the motel, the clerk with one eye approaches, apologizes, and grants them use of Room 215 until the “other gentleman” returns, signaling a strategic retreat rather than open conflict.
Reacher and Chang consider a possible ambush but judge violence inside the room unlikely due to property damage. They notice light seeping from Room 203, indicating a new occupant, and infer that any next move will come in daylight. They separate to their adjacent rooms, prepared to react.
Meanwhile, the one-eyed clerk sets a lawn chair beneath his office window to keep watch all night, following explicit instructions not to provoke further trouble. The night passes under tense truce, with both sides waiting for tomorrow.
