Chapter 22

Overview

Reacher and Chang head toward Colorado, discard their guns, and ship Keever’s valise to Oklahoma City, committing next to pursue leads in Los Angeles. Back in Mother’s Rest, eight conspirators assess the threat and authorize external surveillance of journalist Westwood. Their leader has already engaged a specialist, Hackett, escalating the conflict.

Summary

Reacher and Chang drive for hours seeking a cell signal, concluding they’ll likely find service near Colorado Springs and deciding Los Angeles is their next move. Anticipating airport security, they dismantle and dispose of the Smith pistols at a rest stop. They rotate driving through empty roads toward civilization.

They debate what to do with Keever’s valise. Reacher prefers to discard it, but Chang considers it a hopeful talisman. They compromise by shipping the valise via FedEx to the Oklahoma City yellow house, with Chang hesitantly authorizing no signature on delivery.

Meanwhile, in Mother’s Rest, eight men convene at the dry goods store: the store owner, the irrigation spare-parts man, the Cadillac driver, the one-eyed motel clerk, the hog farmer, the diner counterman, Moynahan, and a well-presented eighth man who clearly leads. He presses them on whether Reacher and Chang will return and what they learned.

The group agrees Reacher and Chang gained little beyond confirming Keever had been in town, and most believe the pair won’t return. The leader reminds them that small probabilities can still shape outcomes and identifies journalist Westwood in Los Angeles as their key vulnerability, per what Keever had revealed.

They discuss buying “assistance,” a service menu ranging from surveillance to a “permanent solution.” The group votes for surveillance—phones, internet, and physical observation—focused on Westwood. The leader then reveals he has already initiated it: a specialist named Hackett is en route and considered highly qualified, marking a proactive escalation against potential exposure.
