Chapter 50
Overview
Reacher and Chang invade a neighborhood drug den to arm and fund their mission. They subdue two dealers, seize cash, two pistols, and an Uzi, and steal an Audi as transport. Reacher dumps the heroin into the street to sow chaos, securing a cleaner exit and denying the dealers their product.
Summary
At dusk, Reacher and Chang infiltrate a boarded-up property to reach a nearby house where street-level drug sales are underway. They scout from the backyard and identify two men inside with duffel bags, rubber bands, and an Uzi on the table. Reacher instructs Chang to feign a weapon with her pocketed hand.
They execute a forced entry: Reacher kicks the kitchen door as Chang smashes the living room window with an umbrella base. The distraction freezes the dealers just long enough for Reacher to drop the armed man with a kick and seize the Uzi, holding the second dealer at gunpoint.
Chang searches both dealers, finding a car key to an Audi and two handguns, a Glock 17 and a Beretta 92. The duffels contain thousands of glassine heroin packets and a large haul of small bills. Reacher orders the conscious dealer to carry the bags, promising no police involvement if he cooperates.
They move through a filthy hallway to the front, past a gathering of locals and juvenile go-betweens. Chang unlocks a black Audi; the dealer loads the bags, and Reacher pushes him back toward the house while covering the crowd with the Uzi.
As Chang drives away hard, Reacher empties the heroin bag out the window, scattering packets and triggering chaos in the street as people scramble to grab them. Using the confusion as cover, they speed off with the cash, guns, and the Audi, leaving the dealers to manage the fallout.
