Chapter 41

Three black-clad, Slavic-accented gunmen fan out in the Lairs’ living room, confronting Reacher, Chang, Evan, Emily, and Lydia. The leader seeks to identify which targets match their brief and muses about payment for more victims, telegraphing intentions of sexual violence and murder.

Reacher feigns compliance, grabs Emily, and drives everyone into the hall, creating a bottleneck that inhibits the gunmen’s fire. In the confusion he retrieves the hidden Colt Python, forces Lydia down, and shoots the nearest gunman in the face. He instantly pivots and kills the furthest gunman with a second shot, then whips a third shot into the leader’s neck before the suppressor-armed Ruger can be brought to bear.

The deafening blasts stun everyone. Evan shields his family, steering them away from the grisly living room. Reacher wipes the Colt and leaves it on the night stand. With Chang, he advises Evan to delay calling 911 by thirty minutes, to claim only two guns were present, and to accept public credit for a righteous home-defense shooting. Reacher plans to leave with one Ruger.

As they move to collect a weapon, they avoid the blood-soaked suppressor and find a cleaner Ruger on the spokesman. Chang suddenly notices the wounded leader is still breathing, revealing a live prisoner and an unresolved threat.
