Chapter 53

Overview

Two black helicopters stage a dramatic flyover while a train and a red rental arrive, but no adversaries emerge. A man calling himself Torrance (Westwood) claims referral by Exit/Mike and seeks euthanasia, distracting the town crew. As several locals mysteriously fail to return, the leader rushes toward the farm, and Reacher and Chang finally enter the diner to meet Westwood.

Summary

Moynahan and the Cadillac driver spot two black helicopters converging on Mother’s Rest. One sweeps south toward the farm while the other hovers low over Main Street as a train arrives and a FedEx truck narrowly precedes it across the tracks. No one exits the train; both helicopters depart.

At the roadblock, a spotless red rental is stopped. Its driver is brought to the diner, where the townsmen debate whether the helicopters were reconnaissance or an immediate search for Keever; they reach no conclusion.

The newcomer introduces himself as Torrance, later referred to as Westwood. He claims he burned his ID, was referred online by Exit and Michael (Mike), and wants a gasoline-engine death. After a cursory wire check and questions about his reasons and rental car, the leader accepts his money and reassures him about the method’s certainty.

One by one, locals excuse themselves—first the Moynahans and a runner sent to find them, then the Cadillac driver, then the store owner—without returning. The leader notices the empty street and declares a problem. He mobilizes the remaining men, driving the dirt road toward the farm to investigate.

Left alone, Westwood waits in the silent diner until the door opens and Chang enters, followed by Reacher, positioning them to confront Westwood while the bulk of the town’s enforcers are away.
