Chapter 14
Overview
Reacher dismantles an armed threat from two locals tied to the Mother’s Rest motel, seizing their guns and stranding them to send a warning back home. He and Chang continue toward Oklahoma City, where cell service returns and stored messages arrive, setting up the next phase of their investigation.
Summary
Jack Reacher exits the Ford strategically, using the door and engine block as cover while confronting two men from the red pickup. The men claim their uncle runs the motel and accuse Reacher of breaking laws by occupying another guest’s room, demanding the key and warning him he’s effectively banned from Mother’s Rest.
Reacher presses about a larger “other thing,” which they deny. When the men reveal holstered pistols to intimidate him, Reacher forces a decisive response by feinting for his own weapon. As they draw, he kicks John Moynahan in the groin and smashes Steven Moynahan’s cheekbone with an elbow, dropping both before they can fire.
Reacher collects their Smith & Wesson .40s, confirms identities as John and Steven Moynahan, and takes about a hundred dollars. He arms Michelle Chang with one pistol and moves the brothers’ truck to the shoulder facing back toward town, then tosses their ignition key far into the wheat, delaying any pursuit.
Reacher and Chang drive on. After hours of rural roads and finally reaching the highway, they near Oklahoma City. About ninety minutes out, Chang’s phone lights up with queued voice mails, texts, and emails—their connectivity restored, promising new leads.
