Chapter 7

Overview

Reacher stakes out the depot and sees no sign of Keever. Instead, a thin, suited stranger arrives and is respectfully met by the irrigation spare-parts man, who escorts him to the motel. The discreet handshake confirms a coordinated local network, prompting Reacher to stay and keep digging.

Summary

Reacher arrives at the small railroad depot an hour early to observe the scene before the evening train. The station is dim, unattended, and old-fashioned, reinforcing how little activity or openness the town offers to outsiders. Reacher waits in the gloom, expecting he might see Michelle Chang in the shadows and perhaps Keever on the train.

When the train finally pulls in, only one passenger gets off: a thin, middle-aged man in a suit carrying a brown leather bag—clearly not Keever. Simultaneously, the irrigation store’s spare-parts man steps from the shadows and approaches the newcomer with deference, greeting him by name and shaking hands.

The spare-parts man takes the newcomer’s bag and leads him toward the motel. No one else disembarks. Chang emerges from the darkness and confirms they are heading to the motel. She notes Reacher chose not to board the train; Reacher admits he stayed because of the handshake—evidence of a quiet, organized reception in Mother’s Rest.

Steps from the shadows, greets the suited newcomer by name, carries his bag, and leads him to the motel.
  • Thin man in suit (new arrival)
Arrives on the train alone, greeted respectfully, suggesting an organized, expected visit; not Keever.
