Chapter 21
Overview
Locals force an early checkout, surrounding Reacher and Chang at the motel. Reacher leverages their elevated position, bluffs superior firepower, and negotiates departure on his terms. He and Chang infer that recent important visitors triggered the sudden clampdown. They leave town to regain communications, intending to return.
Summary
Reacher and Chang return to the motel to find a crowd of about thirty locals blocking them. The one-eyed clerk declares their bookings ended immediately, despite checkout not being due. Reacher assesses the odds, recognizes the lack of probable cause for a fight, and opts to leave.
Upstairs, a deputation pounds on Reacher’s door. He confronts the point man—a hog farmer—and asserts the tactical advantage of the stairwell, warning them not to advance. The locals back off briefly as Reacher claims they will depart soon, aiming to avoid a pointless clash without information.
Inside, Reacher and Chang discuss the sudden urgency. They deduce the motel clerk reported their status and that someone higher demanded immediate eviction, unlike the prior night’s courtesy. They connect the shift to the recent presence of a woman in white and a man in a suit, whose importance had kept the town on best behavior.
After exactly ten minutes, they head down. Reacher forces the locals to finish what they started by loading the bags into the car, exploiting the crowd’s tension until a pragmatist complies. With no violence, Chang drives them west out of town while Reacher relaxes his grip on the gun.
On the road, they agree to find phone service to gather more information. Reacher expects they will have to return to Mother’s Rest once they know more.
