Chapter 52
Overview
From a grain elevator lookout, the Cadillac driver and an injured Moynahan monitor dawn approaches. They identify a FedEx truck to the east and a red car to the west, apparently timed with the morning train. The town organizes a roadblock a mile out. As all vectors converge, helicopter rotors approach.
Summary
At dawn atop Elevator Three, the Cadillac driver and the injured Moynahan scan the vast, flat landscape. They coordinate by radio with the man in jeans and hair, maintaining watch until the morning train arrives.
Moynahan spots an approaching vehicle from the east; the Cadillac driver confirms it’s a FedEx truck. From the west, they identify a distant red car advancing at a pace seemingly timed to coincide with the morning train coming up from Oklahoma City.
They conclude the arrivals are coordinated to divide attention between the road and the rail line. Below, townsmen mobilize, deploying two pickup trucks as a ceremonial-looking roadblock about a mile out, while four men prepare to meet any threat at the ramp, with a fifth guarding the blind side.
The train grows visible, sunlit and fast, while the red car keeps closing. The watchers reaffirm the strategy: handle the threat away from the center if possible, but prepare for a rail-based assault as well.
As the three vectors converge—car, train, and town defenses—the scene tightens. The chapter ends with the sudden whap-whap-whap of helicopter blades, adding an unexpected third-axis threat from above.
