Chapter 13
Overview
En route to Oklahoma City, Michelle Chang and Jack Reacher are tailed by a red Ford pickup. Chang executes a risky maneuver to invert positions, forcing the pursuers to reveal intent. The pickup creeps back, signaling a parley, and Reacher decides to confront them, escalating the conflict beyond surveillance.
Summary
With the next train hours away, Michelle Chang drives her rental SUV toward Oklahoma City while Jack Reacher rides shotgun. On the empty, straight county road through wheat fields, Chang spots a red Ford pickup closing fast and then hanging back, suggesting deliberate surveillance by two local men.
They debate options: if it’s only surveillance, they can lose the tail in the city; if it’s more, a bump-and-crash is possible. Accepting they can’t outrun the truck, Reacher proposes forcing the pursuers forward by switching lanes and braking when they close in.
Chang accelerates to draw the pickup in, then at ten yards swerves left and brakes hard. The pickup narrowly avoids contact and shoots past. Chang stabilizes, leaving them now behind the truck at about a hundred yards, effectively reversing positions.
The pickup turns around and crawls back toward them, signaling a desire to talk rather than ram. Two sturdy, sunglasses-wearing men step out, taking measured positions on the road, suggesting confidence and likely weapons.
Chang warns they’re armed, but Reacher, confident in his abilities despite poor driving skills, decides to confront them. He steps out to meet the men, prepared to escalate if necessary, while instructing Chang to flee if things go bad.
