Chapter 23
Overview
Stranded overnight by a sold-out flight, Reacher and Chang share a single hotel room and have an unhurried dinner. Reacher explains his discharge after downsizing and conflict with a colonel; Chang reveals a scheme that framed her into resigning from the FBI. They reassess Keever’s impulsiveness and deepen mutual trust, culminating in intimacy that binds their partnership going forward.
Summary
Reacher and Chang reach the airport in the evening but find the last Los Angeles flight sold out due to earlier equipment failures. With the next flight at 8 a.m., they secure the last hotel room nearby and decide to get dinner before the rush.
At the restaurant, Chang worries about the single room, prompting small talk that turns personal. Reacher describes leaving the Army during downsizing after offending a lieutenant colonel who then quietly ensured Reacher’s discharge; he decided not to fight, recognizing the institution no longer wanted him.
Chang reciprocates with her story: during a money-laundering case, a woman broke into her home only to use her landline, opening a Caribbean bank account in Chang’s name. The target later threatened to accuse her of taking a bribe, pointing to the account and phone records. Realizing her credibility would be compromised and future testimony tainted, Chang confessed the situation to her SAC and resigned.
They discuss Keever’s reputation for rushing in and his impending third reprimand, which likely pushed him to resign—mirroring the impulsiveness that may have led to his fate in Mother’s Rest. Reacher suggests he might have been caught while waiting for backup rather than charging in.
The conversation shifts to whether this is a date; both admit it would have been under better circumstances and agree it is. After an unhurried dessert and coffee, they return to the room and become intimate, strengthening their personal bond and trust ahead of their continued investigation.
