Chapter 35
Overview
Hackett confronts Reacher and Chang with a suppressed pistol but is outmaneuvered psychologically and physically. Reacher learns Hackett’s name, cripples him with a kick and head-butt, and halts the threat. The neighbor’s appearance raises exposure risks, escalating stakes as their covert search in Chicago becomes visible.
Summary
Keith Hackett arrives alone at McCann’s rooming house door with a suppressed Ruger, confronting Jack Reacher and Chang. Reacher edges into the doorway to check for backup and confirms Hackett is solo. Hackett claims he wants to talk about Mother’s Rest, but keeps the gun raised, signaling control.
Reacher applies psychological pressure, refusing to back up and baiting Hackett into uncertainty. When Reacher slaps the suppressor aside, Hackett smartly drops the gun and counters with fast punches, staggering Reacher and briefly seizing momentum.
They square off with the Ruger on the floor between them and Hackett’s likely backup gun at his back. Reacher manipulates distance to lure Hackett closer, highlighting the risks of either diving for the Ruger or drawing from the holster.
Under pressure, Hackett gives his name. Reacher offers leniency if Hackett names his handlers, framing it as “walk or don’t walk.” Hackett lunges for the Ruger; Reacher front-kicks him under the chin, breaking his jaw and scattering teeth.
Hackett tries for his holster. Reacher head-butts him full-force, dropping him and ending the fight. A white-haired neighbor opens her door across the stairwell as an automatic light comes on, exposing the disturbance.
