Chapter 16
Overview
Reacher and Chang reach Keever’s Oklahoma City home and find the door unlocked and the alarm disarmed. The office’s working papers are missing despite abundant spare stationery, implying someone entered with Keever’s keys and removed evidence. Reacher concludes Keever is captive and links the intrusion to Mother’s Rest. They note small clues: a partly read LA Times supplement and a bookmarked hardcover.
Summary
Guided by GPS, Reacher and Michelle Chang arrive at Keever’s modest ranch house north of Oklahoma City. With no response at the front, they circle to the back, expecting to force entry. The rear door swings open and the alarm panel is already disarmed, suggesting someone entered legitimately.
They clear the house: kitchen, hall, and bedrooms show no disturbance or violence. The dedicated office is tidy and fully equipped, but conspicuously lacks any active notes or loose paper. Cabinets reveal bulk supplies of pads, notebooks, and memo blocks, proving Keever habitually used paper and that working notes were deliberately removed.
From the absence of notes and the disarmed alarm, Reacher infers Keever’s captors took his wallet, keys, and possibly an alarm fob, enabling a quiet search of the house for his records. He concludes Keever is a prisoner and that the operation traces back to Mother’s Rest, Keever’s last known location.
They re-search the home. The guest room suggests unused visitation space for children; the master suite is unkempt. On the night table they find a partly read LA Times Sunday supplement and a partly read hardcover, both marked with slips of memo paper—the only paper left—offering faint confirmation of Keever’s habits but no new leads.
