Chapter 18
Overview
Crasedes confronts the Michiel captain, casually asserts ownership of the Mountain, and compels Orso to admit Sancia is nearby and that no lexicon was accessed. As midnight strikes, Crasedes unleashes overwhelming, reality-warping power, annihilating the Michiel force while sparing Orso and Gregor. His display shifts the balance of power decisively.
Summary
Crasedes steps from the shadows into the Mountain’s atrium, dismissing the Michiel captain’s legal claims and asserting the enclave as his property. He approaches Orso, compels him to admit Sancia is somewhere within, and confirms no Dandolo scriver accessed the lexicons. Crasedes then addresses Gregor, needling his identity and pain.
The captain threatens force. Crasedes responds with a parable about Brassitus, foreshadowing might beyond laws or arms. As the distant clock strikes midnight, a palpable pressure rolls through the Mountain. Crasedes levitates, voice booming, and begins an execution of power meant to terrify and subdue.
He telekinetically crushes the captain without spilling blood, then arrests a storm of incoming bolts midair and sends them back, shredding soldiers. He draws blood from men with a gesture, smashes others together, and sweeps debris and troops aside like pieces on a tilted board—while Orso and Gregor remain unmoved, clearly exempted.
Crasedes compacts the surviving mass of bodies and rubble into a hovering sphere, then sets it upon the floor, an emblem of absolute dominance. Floating serenely, he turns to Orso and notes, almost idly, how long it has been since he last displayed such might—signaling total control of the Mountain and a catastrophic setback for Michiel.
