Chapter 39

Gregor and Berenice free Orso, who is weakened and infected. To resist Crasedes and join the group’s protections, Orso swallows a twinning plate. Sancia, Berenice, and Gregor guide his alignment by touch and shared focus, flooding Orso with their scriving knowledge and perspectives.

Linked, the four rapidly cohere a plan: when Crasedes returns, they will use the imperiat to strip local privileges from Clef, then strike with construction scrivings that still function when lexicons fail. If they can immobilize Crasedes, they will seize Clef and later destroy the wrappings that sustain Crasedes’s existence.

Orso and Berenice place construction plates around the ballroom. Orso, sharing Berenice’s competence, is moved by the fear that her promised future may be lost; Berenice steadies him, insisting a new dream—their shared method—can still survive.

Sancia and Gregor prepare the ambush point. Valeria coolly advises the precise spot where Crasedes usually appears. Distrusting her but short on time, Sancia also uses the final twinned box to down another foundry, then tunes the imperiat to a tight sphere at the predicted arrival point, briefly severing the group’s link while it runs.

Realizing multiple foundries have failed and that Valeria may escape into the main lexicon, Crasedes abandons repairs and jumps back to the estate to destroy the central rig. He materializes directly over the imperiat, staggers as Clef’s advantages fail, and Gregor triggers the construction scrivings. Two massive stone plugs rip from opposite walls and slam together, carrying Crasedes out of the dead zone and crushing him between them.

As Crasedes is pinned and groans, Clef flips free. Sancia dives and snatches Clef, reuniting with the key while the hierophant remains trapped between the stone plugs, their plan’s first phase a success.
