Chapter 4

Overview

The team celebrates their successful theft and Orso reveals a disruptive plan: freely distribute Michiel’s definitions to destabilize the houses. Foundryside’s consulting-library model and its stakes are underscored as Sancia and Berenice privately confront limits—Clef’s silence and Gregor’s unsolved scriving. Gregor lies awake, haunted by dreams and a failed repair that turned violent.

Summary

At the Cracked Crucible, Sancia, Berenice, Orso, Gregor, Claudia, and Gio celebrate the successful relay cube and the copying of Michiel definitions. Orso declares they will give the stolen definitions to every Lamplands firm and even black markets to destabilize merchant control—his strategy to “scramble the court.”

When Otto interrupts seeking help, Sancia sketches density sigils on the tabletop despite Orso’s protests, illustrating Foundryside’s new role. The narrative explains their consulting-library model: clients receive fixes in exchange for depositing designs into a shared library, empowering independent scrivers and weakening the campos’ monopolies.

Walking home through early Carnival revelry, Gregor warns that their “spark” may become a fire that burns indiscriminately. In the attic, Sancia and Berenice confide about limits: Clef, once sentient, remains silent after his reset; Valeria has vanished; the origin of Gregor’s scriving is still unknown. Sancia worries their victories only break one link for another to form.

Alone, Gregor fails to sleep, staring at the fortified Dandolo walls and wondering what his mother builds. He is plagued by recurring dreams and an imposed compulsion to seek someone. He recalls their lone attempt to undo his conditioning: Sancia’s contact triggered violent memories, and he awoke strangling her in a wrecked room. Terrified of what remains inside him, Gregor rejects being a mere rig.
