Chapter 22

Overview

At dawn in the Dandolo gardens, Crasedes regathers himself after destroying the Mountain and rejects an assault on Foundryside, recognizing Valeria’s local supremacy. Confronted with looming war from Michiels and likely Morsinis, he orders a full map of Tevanne’s lexicons and resolves to exploit hundreds of foundries as a citywide substitute for the lost Mountain.

Summary

In the Dandolo gardens at midmorning, Crasedes Magnus drifts from memory to the present, still fogged as his powers wane. He notes Tevanne’s smog from the Mountain’s collapse before Ofelia Dandolo and her chief scrivers confront him, demanding answers and proposing an immediate strike on the Foundryside library.

Crasedes refuses to attack, explaining that the construct empowered by Tribuno’s definition makes Valeria effectively godlike within that space unless multiplied by a vast rig like the Mountain. He hints at a contingency already set against the library, keeping the Dandolos from a rash assault.

As reports arrive that the Michiels have practically declared war and are courting the Morsinis, Ofelia protests they cannot both prosecute a war and serve his designs. Crasedes reframes the crisis as opportunity and requests a complete city map marking all house territories and every suspected or confirmed lexicon site.

Alone with Ofelia, he explains why retaking Tribuno’s definition will not suffice: issuing the grand command to remake the construct requires an immense violation of reality. The Mountain’s stacked authorities once provided that perimeter; with it gone, he must replace elegance with raw power.

Studying the map dotted with hundreds of foundries, Crasedes identifies an imperfect but serviceable citywide ring of lexicons. He resolves to harness these sites collectively as a substitute perimeter, converting Tevanne itself into the apparatus needed to access the privileges for his larger design.
