Chapter 20
Overview
Sancia and Berenice install Tribuno’s definition into their lexicon, empowering Valeria to shield Foundryside and declare a siege posture. Orso is gravely wounded but saved by a physiquere Polina brings, as Polina urges the team to evacuate Tevanne within a week. Gregor remembers dying and his forced resurrections, while Sancia secures Clef and shares a vision hinting Crasedes’s motive: the loss of his child.
Summary
Amid citywide chaos after the Mountain’s fall, Sancia and Berenice rush Orso into Foundryside and transfer Tribuno’s authority definition from their cart to the basement lexicon. With the cone installed and the lexicon ramped, Valeria’s voice becomes audible to both women. Valeria announces expanded capabilities and establishes protections that prevent the Maker, Crasedes, from approaching or affecting the area, warning they are under siege and must prepare.
Upstairs, Orso’s shoulder wound worsens. Recognizing Gio and Claudia want out, Sancia and Berenice pay them with the Michiel definitions and send them through the back exit. Gregor, watchful and shaken, reports watchers outside and confesses that killing in the Mountain triggered memories of his own death and inexplicable resurrections, likely orchestrated by his mother’s alterations. He offers to brave the streets for a physiquere, but Sancia and Berenice refuse to exploit his condition.
Polina arrives with two armed associates, confirms open conflict between Dandolo and Michiel, and notes hunters seek a wine cart tied to Foundryside. She offers help if they’ll talk. Polina’s physiquere, Eduardo, operates on Orso upstairs, extracting debris and treating the wound while the others wait below.
Over food, Polina warns Tevanne is doomed and declares she’s withdrawing her networks within a week, inviting the Foundrysiders to leave and help the plantation peoples. Berenice declines, insisting their work isn’t finished. Gregor returns to confirm Orso will mend with rest. Polina offers short-term security before departing, reiterating that illusions end.
Exhausted, Sancia and Berenice retire. Sancia retrieves Clef from a hidden wall compartment, relieved it is safe. She then shares a vision experienced through Valeria’s imprint: a shrouded man grieving a dying child, and Crasedes wielding Clef to open black doors. Together they infer Crasedes may have lost his child long ago, possibly driving his resolve to reorder the world.
