Chapter 24

Overview

Valeria proposes lightly scriving Sancia and Berenice to “twin” their minds, letting Berenice share Sancia’s permissions and sight. Despite ethical fears, they fabricate and swallow tiny plates, endure a disorienting calibration, and achieve partial overlap of memories and perception.

Now able to see scrivings, Berenice and Sancia privately agree to use but distrust Valeria, and the team prepares for the dangerous next step: Gregor’s fatal reset experiment.

Summary

Valeria admits she cannot empower another like she did Sancia but offers a workaround: combine base hierophantic commands for living beings with the team’s twinning technique to lightly “scrive” two people as partially the same. This would let Berenice share Sancia’s editor permissions and perception, witnessing the time‑scriving inside Gregor’s reset.

Despite moral and legal objections, Valeria provides extensive sigil strings and warns to apply a gradient to avoid catastrophic identity merging. With Orso injured, Berenice painstakingly inscribes two rice‑grain plates. Sancia and Berenice, anxious about privacy and control, swallow the plates; calibration begins with disorienting cross‑perspective echoes, pain mirroring, and chaotic feedback.

After a harrowing period, their minds settle into a stable partial overlap. They can silently converse, share memories and feelings, and experience each other’s viewpoints. They confirm that their private link is inaccessible to Valeria and secretly agree to use Valeria’s help for Clef while remaining wary of her hidden aims.

Testing the result, Sancia flexes her sight and Berenice perceives scrivings through the shared state, awed by the beauty and power. With alignment achieved and the toolchain in place, Valeria pushes them onward. Gregor grimly notes the next step: proceeding with his lethal reset experiment to uncover time commands.
