Chapter 38

Overview

Ofelia confronts mind-controlled Gregor and is forced to stab him with a scrived knife after he fatally impales her, triggering the collapse of his bindings. Through their psychic link, Berenice and Sancia help Gregor reject his commands and reclaim himself. Mourning Ofelia, they ready defenses with the imperiat. Meanwhile, Crasedes restarts a foundry sector but detects another failing and races there with Clef.

Summary

Ofelia enters her ballroom to find Crasedes’s lexicons, Orso bound, Sancia strapped down, and Gregor standing guard under commands. Speaking gently, she tries to reach Gregor’s buried will. When Crasedes’s control surges, Gregor advances and, compelled, drives his rapier into Ofelia’s chest.

As she collapses, Ofelia kisses Gregor’s brow, apologizes, and buries a tiny scrived knife in his shoulder. The wound and its scriving trigger a metallic chainlike reaction as she dies, leaving Gregor reeling in horror and grief.

When Berenice steps over the threshold, Gregor’s orders compel him to kill her. But the Sancia–Berenice twinning floods his mind with shared memories and identity, confusing the bindings. Voices—his and theirs—insist he is not a device. Confronted with love and recognition, Gregor chooses, opens his hand, and lets the sword fall.

Berenice embraces Gregor as the commands fall silent for the first time. Valeria, observing, admits reluctant admiration. Gregor lays Ofelia’s body in a corner, grieves, and then resolves with Berenice and Sancia to stop Crasedes.

They secure the imperiat to buy time. Cut to Crasedes: in the Dandolo foundry depths, he coaxes a lexicon back online, restoring the wedge of night. Another sector suddenly dies nearby; alarmed, he draws Clef and leaps across the sky toward the failing foundry.
